How to Master Trigonometric Identities Without Memorizing Formulas
Understand the single geometric principle behind all three fundamental trigonometric identities so you can never forget or mix them up during an exam.
Every year, thousands of Class 10 students dread Chapter 8: Introduction to Trigonometry. The typical advice students receive is: "Just write the formulas 10 times until you memorize them."
However, during the stress of a 3-hour board examination, memorized formulas are fragile. Students often panic over sign changes: is it sec²θ - tan²θ = 1 or tan²θ - sec²θ = 1? Is it a plus or a minus?
In this guide, I will show you how all three identities are simply the Pythagorean Theorem written in three different ways. Once you see this, you will never need to "memorize" them again.
1. The Root Formula: Right Triangle & Pythagoras
Consider a standard right-angled triangle ΔABC, right-angled at B, with acute angle ∠A = θ.
- Opposite side (Perpendicular, P) = BC
- Adjacent side (Base, B) = AB
- Hypotenuse (H) = AC
From the classic definitions of trigonometric ratios:
By Pythagoras' Theorem, we know:
2. Deriving Identity 1 (Divide by H²)
Let us take the Pythagorean equation and divide both sides by H²:
(P / H)² + (B / H)² = 1
Substitute P/H = sin θ and B/H = cos θ:
Notice that this equation is symmetrical! Both terms are squared and positive, adding up to 1.
3. Deriving Identity 2 (Divide Identity 1 by cos² θ)
What happens if you take Identity 1 and divide every single term by cos² θ?
Since sin θ / cos θ = tan θ and 1 / cos θ = sec θ:
Why is sec² θ first? Because the Hypotenuse is always the longest side, and sec θ = H / B is greater than tan θ = P / B. Therefore, the larger quantity minus the smaller quantity equals 1!
4. Deriving Identity 3 (Divide Identity 1 by sin² θ)
Similarly, divide Identity 1 by sin² θ:
Since cos θ / sin θ = cot θ and 1 / sin θ = cosec θ:
5. The "Golden Triangle" Memory Summary
| Identity | Standard Form | How to re-derive in 3 seconds |
|---|---|---|
| Pair 1 (S & C) | sin²θ + cos²θ = 1 |
Base + Perpendicular over Hypotenuse |
| Pair 2 (T & S) | sec²θ - tan²θ = 1 |
Divide Pair 1 by cos²θ |
| Pair 3 (C & C) | cosec²θ - cot²θ = 1 |
Divide Pair 1 by sin²θ |
6. Solved Board Application
(cosec θ - cot θ)² = (1 - cos θ) / (1 + cos θ)
LHS = (1/sin θ - cos θ/sin θ)² = [(1 - cos θ) / sin θ]²
= (1 - cos θ)² / sin² θ
= (1 - cos θ)² / (1 - cos² θ) Using identity a² - b² = (a - b)(a + b):
= (1 - cos θ)(1 - cos θ) / [(1 - cos θ)(1 + cos θ)] Cancelling common term (1 - cos θ):
= (1 - cos θ) / (1 + cos θ) = RHS. (Hence Proved)
